How to Make Charcoal from Sawdust?

Pyrolysis technology is key to making charcoal from sawdust. It is a chemical degradation process that occurs at high temperatures in a low or oxygen-free atmosphere. The following presents how a continuous sawdust charcoal making machine works.

01 Sawdust Drying
Sawdust is fed into the biochar reactor by the belt conveyor. Then the moisture of sawdust is evaporated by the heat supplied from the outside, reducing it to less than 15%. Or, the customers can choose an independent dryer for drying, as shown in the video below.
02 Pyrolysis of Sawdust

In the hypoxic and micro-pressure main furnace, components in sawdust undergo decomposition, rearrangement, polycondensation, etc. forming charcoal. Typically, the whole reaction takes about 15-25 minutes.

  • Stage 1 – endothermic pyrolysis: At 220-270℃, sawdust begins to decompose and release volatile gas (CO, CO2, H2S, etc.).
  • Stage 2 – carbonization: At 270-400℃, methanol, ethylene, and other substances in sawdust are precipitated. The carbon structure in sawdust undergoes a rearrangement, forming solid charcoal.
03 Syngas Recovery
During the above reaction, a substantial amount of combustible biogas is generated. The biogas will be delivered to the cyclone dedusting system and water seal for purification. Subsequently, it enters the condenser, where wood vinegar and tar are separated. The remaining biogas enters the combustion system, providing heat for the reactor.
04 Sawdust Charcoal Cooling Collection
High-temperature charcoal from the reactor discharge safely by the water-cooled screw automatic discharger. Its temperature will be reduced to below 45℃ and be collected safely.
05 Exhaust Gas Treatment
Flue gas produced after biogas heat source utilization is cleaned by cyclone dedusting, water spray, ceramic ring absorption, and defogging plate. Finally, the flue gas meets the EU emission standard.

Testing Report of Sawdust Charcoal

Here we select local Chinese sawdust to test the quality of sawdust charcoal. The report indicates that the calorific value of the sawdust charcoal produced by our sawdust charcoal machine has exceeded 6000 kcal/kg, approximately doubling that of raw sawdust (typically 3000-4500 kcal/kg).
