Finland Large-Scale Plastic Pyrolysis Project – Reduces Plastic Waste Export Dependency

1. Challenges Faced

Since 2018, China has implemented a “foreign waste” import ban, which includes plastic waste. Many developed countries in Europe and North America can no longer rely on exporting their plastic waste as they once did. They are now forced to confront and resolve their environmental burdens. This turning point has compelled countries to reassess and improve their local recycling and waste management systems. As a developed Nordic nation with strong environmental awareness, Finland also faces the same challenges in handling plastic waste.

2. Goal for Change

Finnish stakeholders have been actively seeking a technologically mature, environmentally efficient, and commercially scalable solution for plastic waste treatment. Therefore, Corsair Group purchased 10 sets of plastic pyrolysis machines from Beston Group to establish a pilot plastic pyrolysis project. The goal is to verify the large-scale scalability and economic viability of this solution.

• 3 sets of plastic pyrolysis plants are currently being installed, with the remaining 7 in planning and construction stages.
• The project is expected to annually process 30,000 tons of plastic waste and reduce carbon emissions by approximately 60,000 tons.
• This initiative will verify the feasibility of large-scale plastic pyrolysis as a new recycling pathway and lay the groundwork for a replicable model across Europe.
• By reducing dependence on waste exports and advancing circular economy, the project will make great contributions to Finland’s and Europe’s sustainability goals.
